Photos used for brochure or report covers, presentation title pages, website homepages and advertising—should:
- Be reflective of our positioning statement by showcasing our resourceful, collaborative and dynamic personality
- Be representative of our diversity in both gender and race
- Demonstrate our differentiating attributes by showing that we provide:
- The opportunity for people to make an impact.
- The support necessary to push the boundaries of knowledge.
- Life-changing connections for outcomes with impact.
Taking a great U of S photo:
- To show our diverse and collaborative nature, have multiple people in your shots.
- Attempt more candid and "in the moment" shots with gesture and emotion—avoid traditional portrait-style photographs for feature images.
- Look for, or create, dynamic lighting and control the shadows to add interest to your subject—avoid your camera's pop-up flash and low-grade snapshot effects.
- Experiment with finding an interesting angle—laying down, standing on a stool or ladder, etc.
- Find a dramatic focal point with a shallow depth of field to draw the viewer in; alternatively, use a wide-angle or telephoto lens to attract attention through an unexpected viewpoint.
Checklist for primary imagery:
- High quality, high resolution, colour-corrected and in-focus.
- Unexpected or unique subject or action to grasp the audience’s attention.
- Interesting composition, subject or angle.
- The photograph tells a story and/or emits emotion.
- Dynamic (demonstrates action and progress), not static (posed, non-action shots).
Photo release forms
If you are planning a photo shoot and the photos will be used in University of Saskatchewan online or print material, you must have a photo release form signed by each person. This does not apply to public events or spaces with crowds.
We advise that you do not use faces of models for the following topics. However, if faces of models are required, models must give explicit consent for their picture to be used in connection with the following:
- Mental health
- Mental illness
- Physical health (including sexually transmitted infections)
- Socioeconomic status
- Sexual activity
- Sexual orientation
- Gender identity
- Substance abuse
- Criminal activity (including physical or sexual abuse)
To receive explicit consent, fill out what topic/campaign the photos will, primarily, be used for in the photo release form. Do this in advance of the model reading and signing the release.
Do not use a stock photograph without reading and complying with the company’s usage agreements. Usually a category called Sensitive Topics explains whether or not photos can be used in connection with the topics listed above.

Filming on campus
Our beautiful campus is a popular backdrop for filmmakers. Anyone wishing to film on campus must complete and submit a request form and a certificate of general liability insurance for a minimum of $2 million; issued by the insurer and showing the U of S as an additional insured part.
The form is available here and can be submitted to the marketing team. A minimum of five working days is required to process your request.
